Increasing Environment Problem In India: Causes and Solutions

Environment Issues In India

In India, the environmental problems are increasing day by day and soon India will have the worst environmental conditions. Air pollution, water pollution, garbage, and noise pollution are big challenges for India. This task will not be easy for this huge country with a population of over 1.3 billion, India will soon overtake China as the most populous country in the world. So India has to take strict and impressive actions to tackle this problem. Between 1947 and 1995 the environment condition of India was worst and between 1995 to 2010, India takes some steps and improves its environmental conditions but still pollution is the major cause in the development and affecting the living standard of the people.

Environmental issues are one of the primary causes of diseases, health issues. The capital of India is badly affected by pollution and every major or metro city of India has a high level of air quality index.

Possible Causes

There is not one cause for increasing environmental issues in India. Some experts believe that economic development in India is major causes for this issue but this is not right because many other developed and developing countries are not facing environmental issues compared to India. Yes, economic development is the cause behind this but not much as the increasing population of India is affecting the environment. Moreover, many experts said that India has a population density of 382 per square kilometer which is also a factor behind this problem but developed countries such as England and Japan has the population density of 395 and 336 per square kilometer respectively. But these countries are enjoying a better and clean environment.

The following reasons are playing a big role in affecting the environment conditions of India:
  • NUMBER OF VEHICLES:- In India, motor vehicles are increasing day by day at a very fast rate. These motor vehicles produce a lot of pollution and other gas emissions which affect the environment of India. In 2015, there were 210023289 registered vehicles and the latest data is not published yet. But it is estimated that there can be a 30-50% increase in these numbers. Moreover, there is no proper maintenance of these vehicles and no proper pollution checkups. This lead to produce more dangerous gases out of it.
  • DEFORESTATION:- India is losing its greenery. The government is doing nothing to tackle deforestation. Moreover, government employees and representatives are engaged with tree mafia and earning good money out of it. Deforestation further leads to soil erosion and thus it affects the environment a lot.
  • NO STRICT POLICY:- The government of India has no policy to overcome environmental issues. The Lok Sabha elections 2019 are on the edge and no political party has mentioned the environment problem which the country is facing.
  • LACK OF SEWAGE TREATMENT
  • LACK OF ORGANISED GARBAGE AND WASTE REMOVAL SERVICES
  • RAPID BURNING OF FUELWOOD AND BIOMASS SUCH AS DRIED WASTE FROM LIVESTOCK
  • CREMATION PRACTICE NEAR MAJOR RIVERS
  • POOR MANAGEMENT OF WASTE
  • GROWING WATER SCARCITY
  • BIODIVERSITY LOSS
  • LAND AND SOIL DEGRADATION

Solutions

  • Electronic Vehicles: The government of India should focus on electronic vehicles and buses which will contribute a lot in decreasing the pollution. Many states of India has launched electronic buses in some routes but still, it requires large attention of Indian public and government.
  • Strict Government Policy:- The government of India has no strict policy to tackle environmental problems in the country. Therefore, the Indian government should make policy to stop the deforestation and should stop the production of petrol/diesel vehicles and start the production of electronic vehicles. There are many more things the government can do such as they should concentrate on the biofuel and use biofuel in airplanes.
  • Planting Trees:- The best place to plant trees is on the roadsides. India has 5.5 million KM of the road network which is one of the largest road networks around the world. So if the government and National Highway Authority Of India take this step to plant trees on the roadside will clean the air of India. Moreover, it will give a beautiful look to the roads. Biodiversity will increases. Indian public should also plant trees at there houses. The population of India is 131 crore and suppose 100  crore people planted a tree than 100 crores of trees can be planted.
  • Ban On Illegal Factories:- The government of India should ban that factories which are not following the guidelines to save the environment. For example, there are millions of factories around India which are draining chemicals into rivers which is illegal. They should treat those chemicals and make them safe. But the government of India and the Indian Administration is doing nothing to control these things. In January 2019 a factory was found in Punjab which was draining dangerous acids into the earth surface since 2006, from almost 13 years. Now think that how much damage they have done to the environment.
